"The Enormous Turnip" (Russian: Репка) or "The Gigantic Turnip" is a Russian children's folk tale, here retold by Sandra with a song that is easy, catchy and fun to sing. This is one of the favorite kindergarten stories, and it's especially fun to act it out. Children love to dramatise the actions and to create new characters.

Once upon a time, there was an old farmer who planted a turnip seed in his garden. The turnip grew and got big, bigger and enormous. The farmer wanted to pull the turnip out.

Pull and pull, but the turnip would not budge.

The turnip did not move.

The farmer called out to his wife for help.
The wife pulls the farmer and the farmer pulls the turnip.

The turnip stayed in the ground.

The farmer’s wife called out to her grandson for help.
The boy pulls the farmer’s wife, the wife pulls the farmer, and the farmer pulls the turnip.

The turnip did not shift.

The boy called out to his sister for help. The girl pulls the boy, the boy pulls the farmer’s wife, the wife pulls the farmer, and the farmer pulls the turnip.

The turnip would not come out!

The girl called out to a dog for help. The dog pulls the girl, the girl pulls the boy, the boy pulls the farmer’s wife, the wife pulls the farmer, and the farmer pulls the turnip.

Nothing happened.

The dog called out to a cat for help. The cat pulls the dog, the dog pulls the girl, the girl pulls the boy, the boy pulls the farmer’s wife, the wife pulls the farmer, and the farmer pulls the turnip.

They could not pull it out!

A mouse comes by and joins the group. The mouse pulls the cat, the cat pulls the dog, the dog pulls the girl, the girl pulls the boy, the boy pulls the farmer’s wife, the wife pulls the farmer, and the farmer pulls the turnip.

Pull and pull, and the turnip pops out of the ground.
